Background

Climate change affects both humans and the natural world and has a significant impact on resource availability, economic activity, and human well-being. ISO develops standards that support the transformation of scientific knowledge into tools that will help address climate change. The ISO 14060 family of standards provides clarity and consistency for quantification, monitoring, reporting and validation or verification of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions and removals to support sustainable development through a low-carbon economy and to benefit organizations, project proponents and interested parties worldwide.

ISO 14064-3

ISO 14064-3 is one of the ISO 14060 family of standards, and it is a standard that stipulates principles and requirements for verification and validation of GHG statements. In other words, it details requirements for verifying GHG statements related to GHG inventory, GHG project, and CFP (carbon footprint of product) and applies to organizations, projects and product GHG statements. ISO 14064-3 was issued in 2006, revised in 2019, and developed for use by a wide range of potential users by providing guidance for those persons performing verification and validation of GHG data and information.

  • Greenhouse Gas Statement : Factual and objective declaration that provides the subject matter for the verification or validation
  • Greenhouse Gas Inventory : Establishing data for each greenhouse gas source list by investigating where and how much greenhouse gas is being generated
  • Greenhouse Gas Project : *Activity or activities that alter the conditions of a *GHG baseline and which cause GHG emission reductions or GHG removal enhancements
  • CFP (carbon footprint of product) : A quantitative representation of the amount of greenhouse gases generated throughout the entire process, including raw material retake, production, transportation and distribution, consumption, and disposal of products and services.

*Greenhouse Gas Baseline – Quantitative references of GHG emissions and/or GHG removals that would have been occurred in the absence of a GHG project and provides the baseline scenario for comparison with project GHG emissions and/or GHG removals
